About
The OORT 2000 is a directory of the human internet — pages made by people, found by a crawler that only visits addresses a person wrote down first. There is no discovery, no ranking bought or sold, and no attempt to cover everything. A site is in the index because somebody thought it was worth reading.
How the search works
The whole index is a file that ships inside this website. When you search, the query is read here and answered from that file. No page on this site loads anything from anywhere else — including the lettering it is set in, which is served from this address rather than fetched from a font company. Search works with scripting turned off, because the form is a form and the results are markup.
Two things change what a search does. A phrase in double quotes matches whole, and oort: narrows the search to this site — oort: consent walls looks only at what we have written, and oort: on its own is the whole of the blog. There is no general site key: most hosts here have a handful of pages, and a scoped search over six documents would be a feature that mostly returns nothing.
The crawler is OORTBot. It identifies itself honestly in every request it makes, and that page says exactly what it takes and how to tell it to stay away.
And the browser
The OORT 2000 browser is a small, fast Mac browser that opens this directory and anything else. It is free, needs macOS 13 or later, and is small enough that a person could read the whole of it. What it leaves out is the point: there is nothing in it to switch off, because none of it was put in. The comparison page is the long version of that claim.
Who keeps it
One person, by hand, in Sheridan, Wyoming. The list of sites is edited rather than generated, which is the only reason it is worth reading and the only reason it grows slowly. If you know somewhere that belongs in it, suggest it. If something here is broken, write to hello@leobruno.it and say what you saw. A person answers.
